About Mary Kersell

I paint atmospheric oil and watercolour landscapes inspired by the sky, sea, and the rugged coastline of Nova Scotia. My paintings are more about how a place feels than about how it looks. They are not meant to be exact records of particular places, but are instead my response to the experience of being in the landscape on that day, at that time.

I want viewers to sense the breeze and the smell of the sea, and to feel immersed in the landscape. People often tell me that my paintings feel calming, and I hope they offer a quiet pause in our busy lives, an effect I try to create by simplifying shapes, softening edges, and building up layers of colour, working intuitively until the feeling that first drew me to the scene emerges from the panel.

I live and paint in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. My landscape work is available through selected galleries and directly from my studio.
